CONTENT
The bill would amend the Michigan Memorial Highway Act to designate the portion of I-94 in Jackson County beginning at the intersection with Elm Avenue and extending east to the intersection with Dettman Road as the "Deputy Gate Keeper George W. Haight Memorial Highway".
BACKGROUND
According to the Department of Corrections, on March 27, 1893, Deputy Keeper George W. Haight was killed by an inmate of the Michigan State Prison in Jackson, MI. The inmate, on the night of Deputy Haight's death, assisted in preparing meals for the guards. The inmate poisoned Deputy Haight's food with a mixture of opium and hydrogen cyanide as part of an escape attempt. Deputy Haight ate his meal and became ill and unable to move.
Deputy Keeper George Haight was a Civil War veteran and had served at the Michigan State Penitentiary for eight years. According to the Department, he was the first employee to be killed in the line of duty.
