Pastor Eddie Brown of the American Legion of Southgate offered the following invocation:
Good morning, as we have gathered here today in honor of the 150th official observance of Memorial Day, let us pray for the whole people of God, our country, and this great state of Michigan. O God, our Father, our Supreme Commander, as we are grateful for Your presence here today and for Your many blessings, may we never forget that great is the nation whose God is You, our Lord. We are thankful to live in a country founded on the principles of justice, freedom, and democracy, but as engraved on the Vietnam wall, we know that “freedom is not free.” Too many young men and women have spilt their blood on the altar of freedom, and to them we owe so much.
You have told us in Scripture that there is a time to dance, a time to laugh, a time to weep, and a time to mourn. So we have come here to honor those who have gone on before us. Our hope is to preserve the memories of their service and sacrifice, not only in the great wars, but also for many after they return home. We pray for their families who support them, but we trust in Your promise as well that “Blessed are they that mourn, for they shall be comforted.”
Lord, we pray for our leaders across this land and in this Senate, that they might govern with wisdom, using discretion and prayer in the making of their decisions. We pray for our veterans who have given so much, many of whom need healing and relief. We pray for our troops, many who are still in harm’s way and who fight on to keep us safe and free. We pray for the whole people of this world, that they might find true peace through You so that our troops may return home safely to those who love them.
And finally, O Lord, as we remember this day our departed comrades, family, and friends, let us also celebrate their lives. Let us renew ourselves to the causes and principles for which they were willing to die, for greater love have no one than that. So we commend to all people their bravery, good works, and sacrifice, and Father, into Your hands, we commend their spirits.
For all whom we pray, we trust in You love and mercy, and God Bless the United States of America. Amen.
