HOUSE BILL No. 4285

     A bill to amend 1976 PA 451, entitled

 

"The revised school code,"

 

(MCL 380.1 to 380.1852) by adding section 1278d.

 

THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF MICHIGAN ENACT:

 

     Sec. 1278d. (1) If a pupil successfully completes all of the

 

following credit requirements while in grades 7 to 12, the pupil is

 

eligible for a STEM diploma endorsement issued by the department

 

under section 1278e:

 

     (a) All applicable requirements of the Michigan merit standard

 

for a high school diploma under sections 1278a and 1278b.

 

     (b) At least 6 credits in mathematics approved by the

 

department.

 

     (c) At least 6 credits in science approved by the department.

 

     (2) Upon determining that a pupil has met the requirements

 

under subsection (1), a school district or public school academy


 

shall submit to the department, in the form and manner prescribed

 

by the department, a certification that the pupil is eligible for a

 

STEM diploma endorsement and a request for the department to issue

 

and transmit to the school district or public school academy a STEM

 

diploma endorsement for the pupil. Upon receipt of the endorsement,

 

the school district or public school academy shall notate the

 

pupil's transcript to indicate the pupil has earned a STEM diploma

 

endorsement and shall provide to the pupil the endorsement issued

 

by the department.

 

     Enacting section 1. This amendatory act takes effect 90 days

 

after the date it is enacted into law.

 

     Enacting section 2. This amendatory act does not take effect

 

unless Senate Bill No. ____ or House Bill No. 4284 (request no.

 

01216'15) of the 98th Legislature is enacted into law.
