A bill to amend 1976 PA 451, entitled
"The revised school code,"
(MCL 380.1 to 380.1852) by adding section 1502a.
THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF MICHIGAN ENACT:
Sec. 1502a. (1) Each public school shall establish and provide
health education for pupils of both sexes. Each pupil attending
public school in this state shall take the courses in health
education.
(2) All of the following apply to health education under this
section:
(a) As part of providing health education under this section,
the governing board of a public school shall ensure both of the
following:
(i) For each of grades K to 5, the public school shall provide
for all pupils at least 50 hours of health education per school
year.
(ii) For each of grades 6 to 8, the public school shall provide
for all pupils at least 50 hours of health education per school
year.
(b) The governing board of a public school shall ensure that
class size for health education is consistent with class size for
other subject areas and other classrooms.
(c) The department shall establish guidelines for health
education that are consistent with health education standards,
grade level content expectations, the state board's policy on
quality physical education, and the best available scientific
research concerning health education. The governing board of a
public school shall ensure that the public school follows these
guidelines.
Enacting section 1. This amendatory act does not take effect
unless all of the following bills of the 97th Legislature are
enacted into law:
(a) House Bill No. 4652.
(b) House Bill No. 4653.
