"POLICE OFFICER": ARSON INVESTIGATOR H.B. 4344:
FLOOR SUMMARY
House Bill 4344 (as reported without amendment)
Sponsor: Representative Thomas F. Stallworth III
House Committee: Local Government
CONTENT
The bill would amend the Commission on Law Enforcement Standards Act to include arson investigators from any municipal fire department in the definition of "police officer" or "law enforcement officer".
The Act establishes the Commission and empowers it with setting minimum standards and requirements for certification as a police or law enforcement officer. Currently, the definition of "police officer" or "law enforcement officer" includes a fire arson investigator from a fire department within a city with a population of at least 750,000 who is sworn and fully empowered by the city chief of police. (Michigan no longer has a city of that size. Previously, this applied to an arson investigator in the City of Detroit, but the city's population fell below 750,000 as of the 2010 census.)
Under the bill, the definition instead would include a fire arson investigator from a fire department within a village, city, township, or county who was sworn and fully empowered by the chief of police of that municipality.
