Senate Bill 1437 (as passed by the Senate)
Sponsor: Senator Mike Nofs
Committee: Transportation
Date Completed: 11-16-10
CONTENT
The bill would amend the Michigan Vehicle Code to do both of the following:
-- Specify a maximum length for a recreational vehicle that has its own motive power, in combination with a trailer.
-- Increase the maximum length for certain pickup trucks that tow a semitrailer designed for recreational purposes plus an additional trailer or semitrailer.
The Code contains length limits for specified vehicles and combinations of vehicles operating on a designated highway of the State. The bill would add a length limit of 75 feet for a recreational vehicle that has its own motive power, in combination with a trailer.
Currently, a pickup truck with a towing rating equal to, or greater than, the weight being towed, equipped with a fifth wheel assembly that conforms with the standards prescribed in the Motor Carrier Safety Act, towing attached with a semitrailer designed for recreational living purposes, may tow an additional trailer or semitrailer if the total length of the pickup truck, recreational semitrailer, and additional trailer or semitrailer, and load, does not exceed 65 feet on any highway in the State, and other conditions are met. Under the bill, the length could not exceed 75 feet.
