A SUMMARY OF SENATE BILL 1420 AS PASSED BY THE SENATE 9-16-08

The bill would amend the Child Protection Law to require a person employed in a professional capacity in any Friend of the Court office to report suspected child abuse or neglect.

The Child Protection Law requires certain professionals to report to the Department of Human Services if they have reasonable cause to suspect child abuse or neglect. The reporting person must make an oral report immediately, and must file a written report with the department within 72 hours after making the oral report.

The bill would include among those who must comply with reporting requirements under the law an employee of any office of the Friend of the Court.
