The Speaker, on behalf of the entire membership of the House of Representatives, offered the following resolution:

            House Resolution No. 97.

            A resolution of tribute offered as a memorial for Peter Kok, former member of the House of Representatives.

            Whereas, The members of this legislative body were saddened to learn of the passing of Peter Kok, a distinguished public servant, businessman, and family man who devoted his life to others in many ways.  Among his many accomplishments, his commitment to state government will long be remembered as a model of integrity and effectiveness; and

            Whereas, A native of Grand Rapids and a graduate of Calvin College, Peter Kok answered his country's call to arms during the dark days of World War II.  His abiding sense of patriotism and his loyalty to those around him were evident in his distinguished military record.  He flew as a bombardier on 67 missions over Italy and southern France, and his heroism was acknowledged in many decorations, including the Silver Star, the Distinguished Flying Cross, and the Purple Heart; and

            Whereas, Upon his return to civilian life, Peter Kok directed his energies to real estate.  Community involvement and his strong sense of responsibility led him to elective public service.  In 1964, he was elected to the first of his seven consecutive terms as State Representative from Kent County.  As a lawmaker, this principled gentleman was known for his advocacy for open housing laws and for his exceptional leadership on mental health issues.  Even after his retirement from the Michigan Legislature in 1978, he was appointed by Governor Milliken to the Michigan Council on Aging.  Clearly, Peter Kok's dedication to others provided a model of unselfish service that is worthy of emulation today; now, therefore, be it

            Resolved by the House of Representatives, That we offer this expression of our highest tribute to honor the memory of Peter Kok, a member of this legislative body from 1965 to 1978; and be it further

            Resolved, That copies of this resolution be transmitted to the Kok family as evidence of our sincere condolences.
