A bill to amend 1949 PA 300, entitled
"Michigan vehicle code,"
by amending sections 617 and 619 (MCL 257.617 and 257.619),
section 617 as amended by 2001 PA 159 and section 619 as amended
by 1999 PA 73.
THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF MICHIGAN ENACT:
1 Sec. 617. (1) The driver of a vehicle who knows or who has
2 reason to believe that he or she has been involved in an accident
3 upon either public
or private property , when the property
4 that is open to travel by
the public , resulting in serious
5 impairment of a body
function or death of a person shall
6 immediately stop his or her vehicle at the scene of the accident
7 and shall remain there until the requirements of section 619 are
8 fulfilled. The stop shall be made without obstructing traffic
9 more than is necessary.
1 (2) Except as provided
in subsection (3), a if the person
2 who violates subsection (1) and the accident results
in serious
3 impairment of a body function, the person is guilty of a felony
4 punishable by imprisonment for not more than 5 years or by a fine
5 of not more than $5,000.00, or both.
6 (3) A If
the person who violates subsection (1) following
7 an accident caused by
that person that and the accident results
8 in the death of another person, the person is guilty of a felony
9 punishable by imprisonment for not more than 15 years or a fine
10 of not more than $10,000.00, or both.
11 Sec. 619. The driver
of any vehicle who knows or who has
12 reason to believe that
he or she has been is
involved in an
13 accident resulting in injury to or death of any person or damage
14 to any vehicle which that
is driven or attended by any person
15 shall give do
all of the following:
16 (a) Give his or her name, address, and the registration
17 number of the vehicle he
or she is driving, also including the
18 name and address of the
owner. , and exhibit
19 (b) Exhibit his or her operator's or chauffeur's license to
20 a police officer or the person struck or the driver or occupants
21 of any vehicle with
which he or she has collided. with and shall
22 render
23 (c) Render to
any person injured in such the accident
24 reasonable assistance in securing medical aid or transportation
25 of any injured person or persons.
