A bill to amend 1976 PA 451, entitled
"The revised school code,"
(MCL 380.1 to 380.1852) by adding section 1810.
THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF MICHIGAN ENACT:
1 Sec. 1810. (1) A person serving as an employee or volunteer
2 in a public school shall not do any of the following at school
3 during school hours, or at a school-sponsored event, in an area
4 where a pupil may be present:
5 (a) Make comments to a pupil promoting a cause or position on
6 a ballot question.
7 (b) Wear a button or other item promoting a cause or position
8 on a ballot question.
9 (c) Display literature or a sign, banner, or similar item
10 promoting a cause or position on a ballot question.
11 (2) A person serving as an employee or volunteer in a public
1 school shall not send home with a pupil any communication
2 promoting a cause or position on a ballot question.
3 (3) This section does not prohibit impartial discussion,
4 study, or display of items concerning a ballot question,
5 political candidate, cause, or campaign as part of the study of
6 history, government, political science, or a similar subject.
