SUBSTITUTE FOR

SENATE BILL NO. 307

                                                                             A bill to amend 1976 PA 451, entitled                                             

"The revised school code,"                                                  

(MCL 380.1 to 380.1852) by adding section 1294.                             

THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF MICHIGAN ENACT:

1   Sec. 1294.  (1) Not later than the beginning of the                         

2   2004-2005 school year, the board of a school district or                    

3   intermediate school district or the board of directors of a                 

4   public school academy shall adopt and implement a parent                    

5   involvement plan designed to encourage parental participation.              

6       (2) The board or board of directors shall provide a copy of                 

7   the parent involvement plan to the parent or legal guardian of              

8   each pupil.  The board or board of directors may provide the copy           

9   of the policy by including the policy in its student handbook or            

10  a similar publication that is distributed to all pupils and                 

11  parents.                                                                    

1       (3) The board or board of directors shall provide a copy of                 

2   the parent involvement plan to the department upon request by the           

3   department.                                                                 

4       (4) The department shall review parental involvement                        

5   practices that have been implemented by public schools in this              

6   state and elsewhere and shall post information at the department            

7   website about successful parental involvement policies and                  

8   practices.
