PHYSICAL EXAM: POLICE & FIRE DEP'T S.B. 985 (S-1): FLOOR ANALYSIS

Senate Bill 985 (Substitute S-1 as reported)
Sponsor: Senator Wayne Kuipers
Committee: Health Policy

CONTENT
The bill would amend Public Act 78 of 1935 (which provides for a board of civil service commissioners in municipalities with full-time, paid fire or police departments) to specify that a physical examination performed on an applicant for a position in a police or fire department could be performed by a licensed physician, a licensed physician's assistant, or a certified nurse practitioner. The bill specifies that the amended section of the Act would not require any new or additional third party reimbursement or worker's compensation benefits for services rendered.

FISCAL IMPACT
The bill would have no effect on State revenues or expenditures. The bill could reduce local unit expenses by a negligible amount by allowing a presumably less expensive medical practitioner to perform required physical examinations.

This estimate is preliminary and will be revised as new information becomes available.
