A SUMMARY OF HOUSE BILL 6437 AS INTRODUCED 9-24-02
House Bill 6437 would amend the Revised School Code to ensure that the board of a school district or a public school academy would provide environmental education for all students in each grade level on at least 10 days of each school year. Under the bill, the environmental education could be provided at any time during the year, and could be integrated into the curriculum as part of science, social studies, or another subject.
Further, the bill requires that the Department of Education, in cooperation with the Departments of Natural Resources and Environmental Quality, develop or identify and approve environmental education curricula that could be used for the purposes of this section. That curricula would include at least age-appropriate materials on water conservation, energy conservation, recycling, wetland and habitat preservation, and other environmental education topics as the department considered appropriate.
