A SUMMARY OF HOUSE BILL 6347 AS INTRODUCED 9-18-02
The handgun licensure act (Public Act 372 of 1927) provides for the licensure and regulation of persons who seek to carry a concealed pistol. Under the act, those licensed to carry a concealed weapon, and those exempt from licensure (e.g., law enforcement officers, etc.), are prohibited from carrying a concealed pistol on certain premises, including on school grounds, in day care centers, sports arenas, houses of worship, and so forth. One of the "gun-free" zones listed in the act is a dining room, lounge, or bar area of a premises licensed under the Michigan Liquor Control Code. House Bill 6347 would amend this provision to exclude a dining room, lounge, or bar area with a liquor license if more than 50 percent of the establishment's retail sales were for food consumed on the premises.
