A SUMMARY OF HOUSE BILL 6292 AS INTRODUCED 9-17-02
Currently, the handgun licensure act (MCL 28.425o) prohibits a person who is licensed to carry a concealed weapon from carrying the weapon on the premises of certain institutions, including a dining room, lounge, or bar area of a licensed premises. This prohibition does not apply to an owner or employee of the premises, however. House Bill 6292 would expand the exception so that any licensed person could carry a concealed weapon in a dining room, lounge or bar unless the license holder was in possession of alcoholic liquor. In addition, the bill would specify that "alcoholic liquor" would mean that term as defined in Section 105 of the Liquor Control Code (MCL 436.1105), under which the term means "any spirituous, vinous, malt, or fermented liquor, liquids and compounds, whether or not medicated, proprietary, patented, and by whatever name called, containing one-half of one percent or more of alcohol by volume which are fit for use for beverage purposes as defined and classified by the (Liquor Control) commission according to alcoholic content as belonging to one of the varieties" defined in Chapter 436."
