A SUMMARY OF HOUSE BILL 5353 AS INTRODUCED 10-29-01

House Bill 5353 would amend Part 435 of the Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Act (NREPA), which establishes hunting and fishing license requirements, to allow a person to carry or transport a pistol in an area frequented by wild animals without possessing a hunting license if he or she possessed a license to carry a concealed pistol or was otherwise authorized to carry a concealed pistol. NREPA generally prohibits a person from carrying or transporting a firearm, slingshot, bow and arrow, crossbow, or a trap while in any area frequented by wild animals unless he or she has an appropriate hunting license. The bill would exempt from this requirement a person who was carrying a pistol as long as he or she was possessed a license to carry a concealed pistol under the state's concealed weapons law (Public Act 372 of 1927). The bill would also exempt a person who was authorized to carry a concealed pistol without a license (e.g., law enforcement officers).
