A SUMMARY OF HOUSE BILL 5938 AS INTRODUCED 9-26-00

House Bill 5938 would amend the Pupil Transportation Act to revise the procedures for receiving and discharging students from school buses.

Currently if students are required to cross the road, the drivers of school buses that are equipped with either alternatively flashing overhead red lights, or with red and amber alternately flashing overhead lights, must activate the lights not less than 200 feet before the stop, stop the school bus as far to the right side of the roadway or private road as possible to provide for the safety of the students being boarded or discharged, and continue to activate the flashing red lights while receiving or discharging students.

Under the bill, the drivers of school buses would be required to activate the bus lights in the same manner, but the bill specifies that they would be required to stop the school bus on the roadway or the private road the students were required to cross.
