A SUMMARY OF HOUSE BILL 5888 AS INTRODUCED 6-20-00

House Bill 5888 would amend the Michigan Vehicle Code to eliminate the requirement to carry a driver license when traveling short distances between a farm and a field.

Currently, a driver must have an operator's or chauffeur's license in his or her possession at all times when operating a motor vehicle, and display the license when a police officer asks that he or she do so. House Bill 5888 would create an exception; it specifies that a person would not be required to be in possession of his or her license when operating a vehicle temporarily on a highway with a speed limit of 35 miles per hour or less, for the sole purpose of traveling between his or her farm and field, or between and field and farm, if the distance to be traveled is not more than three miles each way.
