A SUMMARY OF HOUSE BILL 5861 AS INTRODUCED 5-30-00

House Bill 5861 would amend the Michigan Vehicle Code to prohibit a person from selling or leasing a motor vehicle that would be operated on the highways of this state in which a tracking device had been installed, unless the buyer or lessee or the motor vehicle had consented in writing to the installation. The bill would define "tracking device" to mean a mechanism that emits inaudible signals that permit or aid in the locating of the motor vehicle in which the mechanism is housed.

Under the bill, a person who violated this provision would be guilty of a felony punishable by a fine of not more than $10,000 or imprisonment for not more than two years, or both.
