A SUMMARY OF HOUSE BILL 5141 AS INTRODUCED 11-30-99

House Bill 5141 would amend Public Act 205 of 1941, which concerns the maintenance of limited access highways, to specify that a farmers' market is eligible to advertise on a logo sign, if the farmers' market is located within 10 miles of the interstate exchange where the logo sign stands. Under the bill, a farmers' market would be allowed to advertise on the logo sign designated by the transportation department for restaurants and other eateries. Further, the state transportation department would be required to give preference to the application of an eligible farmers' market over any other restaurant or eating establishment. Finally, the bill would define "farmers' market" to mean a group of farmers or vendors that leases or rents space on a temporary basis in a common facility or at a common site and that offers to sell primarily fresh farm products and other locally produced items.
